Miranda do Douro Cathedral/Museu da Terra de Miranda

Now on display at the MNAA are 12 paintings from Miranda do Douro Cathedral, depicting allegorical representations of the months of the year. These works are typical examples of sixteenth-century Flemish genre painting and may be attributed to the painter Peeter Balten (c. 1527-1584), a contemporary and occasional collaborator of Pieter Bruegel the Elder, whose models served as his inspiration. The figuration of the months had its roots in classical art and in the medieval Books of Hours, and, in this case, it evokes the typical agricultural, hunting and pastoral activities taking place in each season of the year, with symbolic and subtle allusions to the cycles of life and the zodiac calendar.
