The Image of the Sacred in Spanish Sculpture (1500-1750)

Covering the Golden Age of Spanish sculpture, with a significant illustration of its regional variations, this exhibition is, above all, a crefully chosen sample of the remarkable collections of the Museu Nacional de Escultura in Valladolid. Following on from one another, the great names of Spanish sculpture offer us a sequence of images demonstrating the great expressiveness through which a body was successfully given to the sacred at a crucial time in the historical and cultural process of the two Iberian countries. This was a period when the central role of religion in social life gave rise to an insatiable appetite for the bodily materialisation of the devotional phenomenon.
