Beauty in Miniature: Inro and Netsuke (18th-19th Centuries)

This exhibition aims to bring closer the faraway Japan through the visual graphics of some Japanese prints and Hokusai drawings belonging to the MNAA collection. These items, when articulated with costume accessories and objects from Japanese daily life such as inro, tobacco pouches, netsuke and writing utensils, subtly remind us of Portuguese presence in Japan, as well as the constant excellence of traditional decorative lacquer techniques (with special emphasis on makie, takamakie and raden) and the virtuosity of detail.
