• Draw to engrave

    16th-19th centuries

Images printed from an original; the engraving or print is a flat surface where outlines, masses, shapes and surfaces are organised and composed. The process of drawing for subsequent engraving requires, according to the artists involved, certain characteristics. The drawings are “technical” and try to adapt the graphic language to the various forms of engraving.
In this exhibition, drawings used in prints by various European artists, especially Portuguese or those active in Portugal, are shown. Among them Ciro Ferri, Samuel Grimm, Julius Ibbetson, Francesco Bartolozzi, Vieira Lusitano, Joaquim Carneiro da Silva and Domingos Sequeira.
